Portant Docs

Documents are blank, or nothing is generated

Blank output almost always means Portant ran but could not read the data it expected. Work through these in order.

1. Check your connections

An expired Google or HubSpot connection produces empty documents rather than an error, because the merge runs with no data to merge. Rule this out first:

2. Is the whole document blank, or just a table?

Just a table of line items

Line items are associated with Deals, not Contacts. If the automation runs from a Contact record, the line item table renders empty even though the line items are visible in HubSpot.

Run the workflow from the Deal, or use Run a workflow from an associated object. See also Add multiple line items into a single document.

Just the fields from an associated record

Fields that come from an associated record need the association label to be applied on the record itself. If a HubSpot workflow enrols a record without applying the label, Portant has nothing to read and those tags come through empty, so the document looks half filled in.

Check the record in HubSpot and confirm the association label is actually set, then check the same label is selected in the Portant source. See Manage and select HubSpot properties.

This is worth checking carefully when only some records produce blank documents: the workflow is fine, and the difference is in the data.

The whole document

Carry on to the checks below.

3. Check the tags actually match the source

A tag that does not match a source field is left empty. Open the template and run the tag checker, which flags tags Portant cannot resolve, and see Invalid tags.

4. Nothing was generated at all

If there is no output file rather than a blank one:

  • Check the output settings on the Template block. If you expect a PDF and are not getting one, confirm Save output as PDF is switched on.
  • Check your source filters. A workflow whose filters exclude every record completes successfully with no outputs. See Workflow filters.
  • Check the images your template pulls in. An image tag pointing at a link that is not a public, direct image URL will stop the output being created. See Image tags.
  • Check the Outputs page for an error status. Items with errors carry a yellow status icon and an error reason.

5. Check whether it is us

If documents stopped generating for everyone at once, check status.portant.co before changing anything in your setup.

Still blank

Copy a support code from the affected item and open a support ticket. Tell us whether every record is affected or only some, since that difference points straight at the cause.
